I used to have snacks and bottled water in my car, I handed them out in hopes of getting more tips. It seems like a lot of passengers weren't into it. Now I take a different angle. I dress very professionally, open doors for my passengers, and generally treat them very well. This has been working great, I get tips in more than half of the rides I give, it's really helped out my bottom line!

I drive for Lyft to get tips, Uber doesn't encourage passengers to do it. I actually put tip jar in my car when I was driving for Uber to make it clear to passengers that tips were encouraged. Apparently someone reported it to Uber because Uber nearly fired me for it. They might as well have fired me, I now drive for Lyft only and I have no intention of going back to Uber.

I have a genuine conversation with my passengers. Assuming they are interested in talking, I ask them a few questions about their day and show interest. I've been doing this since I started so I have no idea what effect it has on tips, but I'm very happy with the amount of tips I've been getting to say the least.

(opening doors) Currently I hand out fortune cookies after gauging the customer. But this professional approach is one that I would be interesting in taking! |
